Trump Pardons Capitol Rioters, Musk Backs Releases

In a surprising move, former President Donald Trump has pardoned leaders of far-right militia groups and other violent rioters involved in the January 6 Capitol attack. Among those freed are Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes and former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio, who were serving lengthy sentences for seditious conspiracy. The releases come as Trump’s ally Elon Musk voiced strong support, even suggesting he’d take action against officials delaying further inmate releases.

Musk, the billionaire owner of X, celebrated the pardons by sharing heart emojis on his platform. He also urged families of inmates to report any issues with their loved ones’ releases. Meanwhile, Trump defended his decision, claiming the pardoned individuals had endured “inhumane” conditions in prison.

The pardons include over 1,250 convicted rioters, with 14 members of extremist groups having their sentences commuted. Many of these individuals had already completed their prison terms or avoided incarceration altogether. Some, like QAnon Shaman Jacob Chansley, wasted no time celebrating their newfound freedoms—Chansley announced he plans to buy guns now that his civil rights are restored.

Critics, including law enforcement and the family of a Capitol officer who died after the riot, have condemned the pardons. They argue that the move undermines accountability for the violence that day.

Musk’s involvement adds another layer to the story. A top official from his company, Christopher Stanley, was reportedly on-site at the DC jail to ensure the release of two brothers convicted of assaulting police. Musk’s public threats against prison officials accused of delaying releases have also stirred controversy.

As pardons continue to roll out, questions linger about the broader implications of these decisions. While supporters cheer the releases, others worry about the message it sends regarding justice and accountability.
