Figure AI Ditches OpenAI for In-House AI Development

In a surprising move, Figure AI has decided to part ways with OpenAI to focus on creating its own AI models for humanoid robots. The company’s founder and CEO, Brett Adcock, shared the news this week, hinting at a “major breakthrough” that will lead to something truly unique in the robotics world. While specifics are still under wraps, Adcock promised a reveal within the next 30 days that will “change the game.”

OpenAI has been a key player in Figure’s journey, with the two companies teaming up last year to develop advanced AI models for humanoid robots. This partnership came alongside a massive $675 million funding round, valuing Figure at $2.6 billion. So far, the robotics firm has raised a total of $1.5 billion, allowing it to expand rapidly.

However, Adcock explained that the collaboration with OpenAI had its challenges. While OpenAI excels in generative AI, its models aren’t perfectly suited for embodied AI—the kind that powers physical robots. Adcock believes that to truly innovate, Figure needs to take full control, integrating AI and hardware seamlessly. “We can’t outsource AI for the same reason we can’t outsource our hardware,” he said.

This decision comes at a fascinating time. OpenAI recently filed a trademark application hinting at its own humanoid robot plans, though there’s no guarantee it will materialize. Meanwhile, Figure has been making waves in the industry, with BMW already deploying its robots in a South Carolina factory.

Figure’s focus remains on industrial applications, but the company has also explored using its systems in home settings. Adcock emphasized that while this is interesting, automakers like BMW are a bigger priority due to their financial resources.

The shift to in-house AI development aligns with a growing trend in the robotics industry. Companies like Boston Dynamics are also working on custom AI models for their robots, though partnerships still play a role. Figure’s move highlights the challenges—and rewards—of creating a tightly integrated ecosystem.

With a new, larger office in the Bay Area and a rapidly expanding team, Figure is poised to make a splash. All eyes are on Adcock as he prepares to unveil what he calls “something no one has ever seen on a humanoid.” Stay tuned—the future of robotics might just be 30 days away.
